Our Bees

Our honeybees are Carniolans (Apis mellifera carnica). This subspecies of bee was originally from middle Europe, and is often darker in color than other varieties. They are (usually!) very docile, overwinter well, and the colonies grow quickly in the spring.

If you look closely at the picture on the right you can also spot eggs! (tip: hover over image)

Our Hives for 2022

April: Just getting going! The hives have a double box because we are using the top box to feed them sugar syrup until plants start growing and flowering.

Beginning of June: The bee colonies are growing rapidly, and we’re up to 3 deep boxes for three of our hives.

End of June: All of the hives are up to 3 deep boxes, and the first honey supers are on!

July: Supers and more supers! Just how tall can the hives get? Hopefully not too much higher, as we already need a step to reach the top!

September: The honey is harvested! We’re giving 2 hives some extra sugar syrup to get them up to wintering weight (the grey boxes). The other two are ready for winter.
